When I first saw the poster for Our Beloved Summer with its bright and cheerful aura, I knew I wanted to check it out and perhaps put it on my to-watch list for when it premiered. 

I waited until the majority of the episodes were out so I could binge them. I prefer to watch a drama all in one go rather than watching it weekly so the story is fresh. 

I wasn’t sure what to expect if it was a happy or sad ending when I read the description since it focused on a story involving former lovers. Would it focus on their past relationship and how things went wrong? Or would it focus on the present? 

Our Beloved Summer is a romantic comedy KDrama about two ex-lovers who cross paths years later to film a sequel to the documentary they shot in High School.

Before starting the show, I recognised that some of the episode titles were movie titles: I Know What You Did Last Summer, 10 Things I Hate About You, Love Actually, and Begin Again to name a few. 

I’m not sure if all episode titles are movies, but if they are then, that’s really cool. 

This detail made me more excited to dive into the episodes. It also made me wonder if the episode title and the movie the episode was named after had anything to do with the actual episode though.

I haven’t watched all the movies mentioned in the episode titles, so I’m not sure if there are any references to the movies in each episode.

Our Beloved Summer Review

Our Beloved Summer begins with the documentary that Kook Yeon-su, (lead girl) and Choi Ung (lead guy) are filming while in High School.

The documentary follows the lives of the highest and lowest-ranking students of the school.

The first episode shows you how different both leads are in terms of personality and their priorities in life.  Early on, you’ll be able to tell that it’s going to be opposites attract type of love story. 

Since they were total opposites, they tended to clash a lot. And at times, you’d wonder, “so how did they even end up together?” But they did. 

Kook Yeon-su is independent, hard-working, and an overachiever. At times, people around her have labeled her as self-centered and “cold” but it’s her defense mechanism to protect herself from getting hurt. And her way to survive a harsh reality that looks down on children who grow up without parents.

It doesn’t make sense to me why they treat kids that way when it’s not even their fault that their parents died. Good thing she has her grandmother who loves and looks out for her. However, they face financial hardships as well. 

Choi Ung, on the other hand, is an artistic, carefree, and warm guy who usually keeps to himself. He wants to live a simple, peaceful life that reminds me of the life of a hermit. He has no expectations or plans for how he wants his life to turn out.

He has such caring and loving parents who own a chain of restaurants so he’s quite comfortable as well. And at one point even mentioned that drawing would only be a hobby.

The name of the show, Our Beloved Summer, is so fitting as summer plays a huge role in their relationship.

It is a symbol of the warmth, comfort, and love they give each other. Summer is usually associated with romance, too. But for Kook Yeon-su, and Choi Ung, it’s also the season their love blossomed. 

The first few episodes establish their love story and many flashbacks of the years they were together. We, later on, learn that they were together for five years. That’s a long time. We’re also shown where they are present time, a ten-year time jump, from their High School documentary to see how their careers panned out. 

And it’s surprising on both ends.
