In today’s Behind the Blog series, Sarah of SunshineSarahXo shares her story and what she wished she knew before starting a blog. She’s also featured in this month’s edition of The Spotlight: Blogs to Check Out This May.
Meet Sarah of SunshineSarahXo
Please tell us more about the person behind the blog. How did you start blogging, and what made you start this particular blog?
I started blogging in 2012 when I was playing an online fashion game with other friends on Facebook.
I half thought I could use it as a place to share the outfits I was creating in the game, but that didn’t happen.
I was very naive when I first started blogging, I didn’t even know how to use Blogger!
It was a good time to start as there weren’t many people blogging and it was all still so new.
I’ve kind of grown up with it and with that my content has changed too – and continues to.
I’m a lifestyle blogger because I don’t want to be tied to one particular niche, instead, I want to be able to write about everything that happens to me.
What is your purpose for your blog? Do you aim to help anyone in particular?
The aim of my blog is perhaps to make people feel less alone.
I’ve suffered from brain fog/social anxiety/depression before and I feel like sharing these will help others.
Although this isn’t the primary focus of my blog, there are plenty of posts on these subjects for people to read.
I’m also writing more about my journey into veganism and I’ve found these posts have helped people too, which is always my aim with my writing!
Another avenue I’ve started with is documenting my journey with the NHS Couch to 5K training plan which I started in February. I’ve enjoyed writing it and other people have found it to be useful too, which is always the aim with my writing!
What content do you publish on your blog, and are there any regular columns or blog series?
There’s something for everybody and I hope they get something from my blog every time they click on it.
I used to do a ‘Meet The Blogger’ type series where I interviewed fellow bloggers, this was very successful and I really enjoyed it!
I also used to do a ‘Small Business Feature’ which I also really enjoyed.
Do you make money blogging? If yes, how did you start monetizing it? If not, do you want to make money blogging, or do you run a blog as a hobby?
No, I don’t make money blogging. I haven’t monetised my blog and I don’t really plan to.
I get the occasional sponsored post but apart from that, I tend to work on producing content that others will get something from.
What is your favorite thing about blogging?
My favourite thing about blogging has to be the community. There are so many lovely bloggers out there you just have to be open to meeting them!
What is something you wish you had known before starting a blog?
Hmm, I guess I would have liked to have known everything I know now.
SEO help would have been extremely useful at the beginning, as well as advice about payment/gifted products.
But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t be the blogger I am today if I hadn’t had to learn everything along the way.
What’s one tip you can give to other bloggers?
My one tip to other bloggers I guess would be to not worry about the content you’re producing.
There will always be someone out there who finds it resonated with them in some way, or they find it useful and want to share it.
So just do you and don’t worry about anybody else!
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you and your blog
I would like people to know that I blog from the heart.
Everything I produce is written with love and care.
I don’t sell out for a quick buck, nor do I accept ‘gifted products’ easily.
I genuinely write because I love it and I want people who visit my site to come away having learned something or to feel that they’re not alone.
